Salam

Saya dilantik secara rasmi membaca, menyemak dan memberi komen tentang penulisan tesis PhD / masters student luar negara.  Sepanjang pembacaan tesis tersebut ada beberapa patah perkataan yg telah digunakan .. tetapi .. saya rasa tak kena/ sesuai diperingkat penulisan masters/ PhD.

Perkataan-perkataan tersebut ialah:

(i)  indeed

(ii)  thus

(iii)  therefore

(iv)  as a result

(v)  banyak lagi.

Jom saya kupaskan sedikit sedikit dalam penulisan blog ini.  Jika ada yg bagus ..silalah ambik faedah dari kupasan ini .. jika tidak saya memohon maaf.  Maklumlah tok nenek saya bukan berbangsa Vikings di Scotland/ Sweden itu.

(i)  indeed

Saya berjumpa perkataan ini pada ayat pertama , paragraf satu BAB KEDUA dan KETIGA thesis lagi.

Indeed the formula was correct ever since.

bla ..bla.. bla..

Mengikut pengalaman saya membaca tesis yg ditulis dari seberang laut ....  tak pernah pun saya terjumpa perkataan 'indeed ' ini secara santai atau serious dalam ayat awal satu satu paragraf.

Kalau perkataan ini timbul di peringkat akhir satu satu paragraf ..mungkin ok kot ..tetapi ..  overall it sounds a bit funny lah.

So I took out  my Dictionary Collins Cobuild to help me explaining this ..

you use indeed to confirm or agree with something that has just been said.

oleh itu .. betullah tekaan saya .. saudara/saudari  kena hujahkan formula / idea itu dahulu.  after all the proofs ..you can use the word 'indeed ' at the last sentence.

you use indeed to introduce a further comment or statement which strengthens the point you have already made.

indeed is used to emphasize a particular word.  Example:

'the engine began to sound very loud indeed.'

(ii)  thus

Selalunya dalam hujah pembuktian matematik atau statistik , kita boleh menggunakan 'thus' to conclude the proving steps.

example

A = B
B = C
thus  A = C

but ..it is much better to write

therefore A=C.

The mistake made was  the word 'thus' came in the first sentence of a paragraph.

I went to UM to learn the word 'thus' in 2011 with Prof Dr xxxxx ( kelantanese lady) who speaks very much like the Ewing's family DALLAS

she recommended us to use .....the words '  as a result' ... instead of 'thus'.

(iii)  therefore

Perkataan ini ...  membawa pembaca kepada ayat kesudahan setelah bercerita ..panjang lebar dlm satu atau 2 muka surat tesis.

contoh.

page 1 ...    budak india itu berangan nak jumpa kekasihnya  Dimple

page 2 ...  Dimple pulak bermain main kaki di atas katil memikirkan Rajesh Khanna

page 3 ..  disebabkan persaan cinta yg tak boleh dikawal lagi

page 4 .. therefore Rajesh Khanna membawa lari Dimple menggunakan motosikal berjenis 'Norton' itu.

Look ...        the word 'therefore ' is used in the last page of the story.
it concludes the running away of a beautiful indian girl with her lover Rajesh Khanna.  reference:  filem Bobby

(iv)  as a result to ..

Begitu juga .. pengunaan as a result ini.

it must come at the last of your discussion.

let the story 1 flows.
let the story 2 flows ..

then ..  if the flow is consistent ..

you may used 'as a result to that ...  both lovers ran away from their beloved families'.
it sounds more interesting than ..

if you keep repeating the words 'as a result to .. ' berkali kali banyaknya.
