salam.
saya menyambung cerita ni. Maaf.
We r built quite alike to Indonesian, Thais, Bruneis, Filipinos, Singaporeans and …
We r not build by God as big as the Americans like George Foreman, Muhammad Ali or Obama. They are tall, big and strong. If we are put to run 100 metre race in any Olympic on this earth we have to get the help of God to outrun the Americans. Why? Just measure their strides. If they run 100 metres in 9 seconds .. only Rabuan Pitts can run as close as 10.5 seconds. Thus we need miracle to stand on the podium to get the gold Olympic from the first lady of usa. See? Our body structure is not to be used to compete among those who are giants as compared to us. See them swim in the Olympic pools. See their back stroke / front stroke. Their arms when they r fully stretched. Asians? He..he.. u can answer it for your selves.
a) Brain size.
No Malaysians has obtained Noble Prize for any thing yet if I am not wrong. Mathematics formula? Not yet. Pathagoras Theorem? Not yet. English novel on anything worth ? not yet I’m afraid. Tongkat Ali’s power? May be but we are not competent and professional yet in terms of producing scientific paper(s) to prove that Tongkat Ali is more powerful than Viagra. Why? You need chemical formulae to out do Viagra’s. they got all the backings from chemical phameceutical companies all over the world to support that theirs is far more superior than any kinds of our roots no matter where you can find them. Yes you must prove it using scientific findings and try it among 60 ~ 75 year old men whom you can call them as your treatments. If you visit my village, I don’t see how you can find these so called healthy old men to be used as your respondents . why? My village has more veteran ladies who are living alone with their grand sons and daughters. Oops .. their husbands have long time gone to the heavens. Why? From interviews, most of the men were over used when they were young (25 – 45 year olds). They work all round, they sort out the bills, .., and many many more jobs. Some of them do 2 or 3 jobs per day. As a result you cannot find so many of them around to try the power of ‘roots’ and collecting the results and published your findings. Yes the journals are also controlled by the west. So how to out beat them? Any one please?
b) Heart size
We are fortunate to have the same heart size than the foreigners. But what really matter is we are mostly soft upon hearing bad news, calamities befalling to our neighbours. We pour in million of ringgits to help Japan earthquakes victims, Acheh Tsunami victims and many many more. That’s what differentiate us than the west. We are mostly generous type of people. Have you seen waves of foreigners coming to Malaysia just to beg at the Pudu Raya Bus Station in Kuala Lumpur, Jamek Mosques, KTM Central Railway Stations .. and many more places. So we won the generosity aspect but oops.. no way we can get Noble Prize for that because in Islam we do things sincerely for Allah alone and nothing else. We put some coins into the cups of the handicapped foreigners (Mynmars, Bangladeshi, Indians, ,.. so many places they had originated) any time. Our government can not do anything about this comings. We are too generous. Even the police are very soft. If they do not have the hearts to catch and send them away to their mother countries , they marry them. Settled? Proof? Check out Metro headlines.
c) Education
Most of us are educated basically up to SPM/ GCSE “O”level. Bigger and bigger proportion of 18 + youths go to universities. So many of us are graduates. We are good at our own fields but alas .. many of the things we used daily are not produced by our own engineers. Ask Petronas. Why do they act as consultants and in the mean time they out source their work to the others. Very strange indeed. They have their own engineers but strangely .. they are asking others to do their own work.
Economics teach us to use things cheaply. But if this philosophy is not read properly and intelligently, our engineers can not be world beaters at any cost. Why? We can not invent our own products. Even if we can invent things , sooner in the process in producing the invented things, we got stuck with cost issues. Marginal Cost = Marginal Revenue? Which is cheaper to produce this or we just buy from the Thais or Indians? More over we can fly Air Asia after this decision. So our inventions did not last long ..and create ever lasting impact to the world. Check ATOM computers. What happen to Atoms? We did not last in most thing we initiate. Right? One of the factors is ..Malaysian ministers are not engineering and science trained (blamed by many intellectuals living abroad). They can talk big about inventions but .. they cannot bring us to the other end of the tunnel .. when from their young age to this present age .. they haven’t invented anything yet. (laugh). Just compare Singapore ministers with ours. Their brains created NUS to be among top 10 universities in the whole world. Why? Because they undergo strict science, technology, maths, engineering background from their school education. Many of our universities are ranked 200 ~ 500 best universities in the whole world. Why? We started to create our own league. So fast we quit competing with the best universities. We can’t last. Who cares?
MRSM students are regarded as the best brains in Malaysia. I still could not understand why MARA sent brilliant Malays to top British universities but after graduation MARA seems to be happy enough to let these cream of students to work with non-malay, non Malaysian industries/ firms.
Why can’t they be offered jobs to create inventions , inventions and let them produce products that are world leaders. Create the niche area(s). after all they came from top 10 world class universities. In short, MARA plan is superb at the beginning but failed ..some how miserably at the end of the planning. So where are those brilliant MARA students once they are over 40 ? Any one plz? Please exclude the lecturers working in the universities. We need industrial workers who can beat Panasonic, National, Toshiba, IBM etc etc. MEC Kuantan went bust many years ago. Right? Proton products are not seen as first choice vehicles by the top earners in Malaysia. In that case, how can proton be world leaders? There is not enough cash to sustain our own technology. I know this because I read British economics and accounting in my first degree in Leeds. To add salt to our wound, ask Tun Mahathir too. Did he feel proud driving Proton? [ However, personally and from the core of my heart, I salute Mahathir. He has superb brain but mind you .. he was not trained in Malaysia. Singapore medical school developed his brain. Analyze his speech in world meetings. Superb .. brilliant but .. alas … no Noble prize yet.]
d) Mixed cultures
Malaysia has 3 big races living peacefully, harmoniously and we are blessed with so many holidays. The Malays has 2 big rayas, the Chinese has CNY festivals, the Indians has Deepavali, some Chinese and Indians are Christians so 25 th Dec is another holiday .. Imagine this February 2011.. we got 2 public holidays on Tuesdays. The BN government want to be seen as very nice government to all the races in this country. If I am an industrialist, I do not see how my products can catch up with the Chinese and Indians in the mainlands if my machines suddenly stopped in the mid-week. If we have so many holidays, the workers’ mind sets are more set to be holidaying. Holiday planners think differently than those Japanese factory workers. Therefore , in short, we cannot be world beaters. So simple.
In the universities, if every race has religious holidays, we are prone to miss so many datelines. I conducted tests many times since I started teaching here the last 10 years. Every time I run a test, there must be somebody missing. ‘Raju going sembahyang, sir.’ So how? Do I have to build another test with identical level of difficulty from Bloom’s (1956) Taxonomy point of view? Oh.. so difficult ma.
My teaching has also suffered. Last few years we took PPSMI (teaching maths and science in English, thanks Tun Mahathir). But suddenly the government stopped and turned to malay. Why? Because our 14+ students performed badly at maths and science in TIMMSS 2003, 2007 report as compared to Singaporean, Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese. We came from top 10 position in 1999 to 20th plus position now .. so we turned 180 degrees. Use Malay! Our syllabus look world class but in my teaching I used 2 languages English and Malay at the same time. I have to use Malay because my polytechnic students who came to read IT degree are not so fluent in English. So mathematically, my brain is splitted into 2 worlds everytime I go onstage to teach maths. English and malay. If we have to teach 60 minutes mathematics discrete , tell me ..where is the exact pure maths lessons when the delivery mode is in 2 parts. Malay and English. The jargons , terminologies, and of course the beauty of maths has lost some where along the way .. when I walked out from the lecture theatre .. I feel .. is that what I want them to learn maths ? they rely more on my power points than Schaums’ in the library.
e) Etc etc .
Nothing more to write. If God gives me 100 more years perhaps I can fill up this point of writings. So watch out mate. A 150 old writer? Laugh.
Tq. Wasallam.
Blessed writer in Malaysia.
