English Lessons for Malays 29

Posted by sazali

Hi.

We meet again.

I think today I want to address some common errors spoken by Malay politicians/ academicians when they speak on the stage.

First .. "you all".

It should be 'all of you'. I think this is the way our malay brains work. Semua kita sekali .. we all. It should have been ' all of us'. Rumah kuning ... yellow house. Not house yellow.

Secondly, "most of the boys and most of the girls" .. It can be addressed as ' most of them/ the students'. That will suffice. Short but correctly put.

Thirdly, speech / speaker/ lecture/ lecturer .

I saw many times in the assignments' front cover .. my students wrote .. Lecture: Sazali. It should be 'lecturer: Sazali'. Just put the alphabet 'r' at the back. Farmer is some one who works on the farm. Some one who fights against the communist is called a fighter like Sarjan Hassan in Bukit Kepong. There were many fighters .. that night, you know?

Somebody who lectures maths in the polytechnic/ university is called a lecturer.

When you speak. the result of speaking is called a speech. Great speech. Horrible and boring speech on abstract mathematics. The one who gives a speech on mathematics in a big conference is called 'the key speaker'. He is the speaker. He speaks well ( deep and wide) on a certain area of mathematics like Functions/ relationships.

-----------------------

I think there are many more silly errors ... from the speaker but no one bothers to correct them ..that is why .. the silly mistakes is all over the places in Malaysia. Laugh.

Well i wrote this to correct them. So please pass around this small essay, will you?

May God bless you. Ameen.

Bye.
