English Lessons for Malays 19

Posted by sazali

Hi again.

He..he..

Today I am going to explain you something called 'gerunds'.

Let us look back some of our early notes and lessons. We always write with the first person such as "I", "We" and "S/he".

examples:
1) I write a lot as a hobby. [ the noun here is the hobby]
2) She cooks food for fun. [ fun is the noun]
3) They think mathematics all the time. [ time is the noun]

So you can see that "I/ she/ they" are the subject followed by stories and predicate. They are OK . but in writing it is better to have some new style/ variety in expressing your thoughts.

Conversions:
1) Writing is my hobby. [ now writing is the 'noun']
2) Cooking food is fun.
3) Thinking mathematics is always our pleasure to kill the time.

Here in the sentences you can see that the 'verb +ing ' has turned into a noun.
Noun + verb + story = 1 complete sentence of its own. this is called 'gerunds'.

Exercise: turn each of the sentence below into gerunds.

1. The boys like to kick a football on the pitch before 6 p.m.
2. The girls like to observe the guys that are playing on the pitch.
3. The students enjoy the movie "to sir with love".
4. The muslims fast for 30 days in a year.
5. The British government left this country with their system of administration.

God willling, I supply the answer tomorrow - our next class.

With that . Good bye every body.
See you.
